Differences between the Spanish verbs Pedir and Preguntar.

Las diferencias entre los verbos Pedir y Preguntar. En inglés, los dos verbos significan “to ask”, pero se usan en situaciones diferentes.
Preguntar es “to ask a question or to ask information” y pedir es “to ask for something or to request”.
Hablemos un poco más sobre el verbo preguntar.
Si vas a un país extranjero de vacaciones, vas a tener que preguntar mucho: dónde están diferentes lugares, cuánto cuestan diferentes cosas, cómo decir algo en español… El verbo que describe todas estas preguntas es" Preguntar ".
Por ejemplo:
“Voy a preguntar a alguien dónde esta la calle Mayor”
“Ese hombre me ha preguntado cómo ir al ayuntamiento”
“Tienes que preguntar cuánto cuestan los boletos”

También puedes usar la preposición “por” y decir “preguntar por”. En inglés significa “to ask for or about”.
Por ejemplo:
“Pregunté por María y me dijeron que no estaba”
“Voy a preguntar por mi pedido, que todavía no ha llegado”
“Ayer vi a tu amiga Ana y me preguntó por ti”

Ahora, hablemos un poco sobre el verbo Pedir.

Si no quieres información, sino que necesitas que alguien haga algo por ti: que te ayuden a subir las maletas a la habitación, que te reserven una excursión en recepción, que te busquen una camisa en otra talla… En estos casos usas el verbo pedir, que significa en inglés “to ask for something” o “to ask someone to do something”.
Por ejemplo:
“Voy a pedir al recepcionista que me pida un taxi”
“Voy a pedir un café ¿Quieres algo?”
“Una mujer me pidió ayuda cuando volvía a casa”
“Este chico siempre les pide dinero a sus padres”

Pedir and Ordenar

 the verbs pedir and ordenar have very similar meanings and uses.

 The most common way to order food in a restaurant is to use the verb pedir (to ask):

Aquí, por lo regular, por lo... económico, piden la comida corrida.
Here, generally, because it's... cheap, people order the lunch special.

 However, perhaps due to an influence from English, using the verb ordenar (whose primary meaning is "to command" but also means "to put in order") has become a popular way to order food or products in Spanish:

Estamos ordenando tres tacos y una ensalada.
We are ordering three tacos and a salad.

Si ordenas hoy mismo recibirás un descuento.
If you place your order today, you will get a discount.

Estamos listos para ordenar.
We are ready to order.

¿Qué quieren ordenar?
What do you want to order?

In the previous examples, you can use either ordenar or pedir without altering the meaning of what you are saying. In some contexts, however, you can't use ordenarinstead of pedir. For example, you can say Quiero pedir un descuento (I want to askfor a discount), but not Quiero ordenar un descuento ( I want to order a discount); you can say Quiero pedir un favor (I want to ask a favor), but to say Quiero ordenar un favor (I want to order a favor) is an obvious contradiction.
Finally, it's worth remembering that the verb ordenar also means "to put in order" and "to command":

 preguntar como pedir en ingles significan to ask pero a veces necesitamos añadir la preposición for y decir ask for.  

Ejemplos: ¿Puedo preguntar algo? Can I ask something? ¿Puedo preguntarte algo? Can I ask you something? ¿Puedo pedir algo? Can I ask for something? ¿Puedo pedirte algo? Can I ask you for something? Pregúntame lo que quieras. Ask me whatever you want. Pídeme lo que quieras. Ask me for whatever you want. Necesito preguntarte si puedes hacerme un favor. I need to ask you if you can do me a favour.        (inglés americano: favor) Necesito pedirte un favor. I need to ask you for a favour. Voy a pedir ayuda. I’m going to ask for help. Hay que tener cuidado con el orden de las palabras.  Siempre es así: preguntarle algo a alguien  =   to ask somebody something pedirle algo a alguien   =   to ask somebody for something Por ejemplo: Necesito preguntarle algo. I need to ask him/her something. ERROR TÍPICO:  I need to ask something to my brother.  I need to ask my brother something.  se dice Es igual con pedir aunque además hay que recordar colocar el for delante del “algo”, por ejemplo: Voy a pedirles ayuda. I’m going to ask them for help. Voy a pedirles ayuda a mis amigos. ERROR TÍPICO:  I’m going to ask help to my friends. Hay que decir:  I’m going to ask my friends for help. Otro ejemplo: Quiero pedirle un aumento de sueldo a mi jefe. Primero sin “a mi jefe”: Quiero pedirle un aumento de sueldo. I want to ask him for a raise. El “my boss” reemplaza el “him”: Quiero pedirle un aumento de sueldo a mi jefe. I want to ask my boss for a raise.  La idea de este post es explicar el uso de to ask for para pedir algo.  Pero quiero añadir una cosa más: To ask for somebody se utiliza para preguntar por alguien cuando se refiere a querer ver o hablar con alguien.  (Si es más bien preguntar información por alguien, sobre alguien se dice to ask about somebody.) Por ejemplo: On his first day at school, David cried and asked for his mother. En su primer día en la escuela, David lloró y preguntó por su madre. las respuestas: 1.  Can you ask him / her if the answer is correct? 2.  Can you ask the teacher if the answer is correct? 3.  Can you ask him / her for the book? 4.  Can you ask the teacher for the book?
